Cervical Radiculopathy

Cervical radiculopathy is a medical term used to define a group of symptoms deriving from a single or multiple conditions on the cervical spine due to dysfunction on the spinal nerve roots. The greater sum of the conditions affecting the cervical area of the spine result in impingement of the nerves which generate the physical symptoms relating to radiculopathy. There is various types of  impairment  that can cause cervical radiculopathy to progress. Conditions which alter the natural structure of the spine through degeneration are the most common to cause dysfunction on the nerve pathways, although trauma from an injury in younger people can also misalign the spine and cause damage. Herniated discs and bone spurs developing from these can also pinch the spinal nerve roots over time. The irritation of the spinal nerve roots caused by compression will damage the nerves, leading to pain, tingling and loss of sensation in the hands and arms, as well as muscle weakness. T...

5 Common Causes for Lumbar Pain

While low back pain is especially common, the problems are caused by a mixture of conditions or injuries involving the complex network of spinal muscles, nerves, bones, discs, or tendons in the lumbar spine. An affliction to any of the local structures of the lumbar spine can result in radiating pain that may travel to other parts of the body but the symptoms and severity of low back pain vary for each person. These are 5 frequently diagnosed conditions that could be the source of your lumbar spine pain.   Sciatica Sciatica  attributes  to a group of symptoms rather than a single condition. Sciatica is identified by one or multiple symptoms consisting of chronic pain that extends from the lower back down to the buttocks and leg, tingling sensations on the lower extremities, numbness and weakness, or difficulty fulfilling everyday activities like walking or sitting. These occur when the sciatic nerve roots become compressed and irritated due to a hidden cond...

Arthritis in the Facet Joints

Facet Injuries Can Strike Abruptly Arthritis with degeneration, also referred to as osteoarthritis, is caused during breakdown of the bone and cartilage of the spine from the normal wear and tear that comes with age. Arthritis can occur in different areas of the spine causing  debilitating  neck or low back problems but, among the different types of osteoarthritis, facet joint arthritis is one of the most common of all the lumbar spine conditions through degeneration. The facet joints are aligned on the back of the spinal column, linking each vertebra together. The joints are covered with articular cartilage that function jointly with the spinal disc spaces between each vertebra to allow movement and flexibility on the spine. Although, like other joints in the body covered with articular cartilage, the facet joint cartilage will breakdown as a result of degeneration which makes them more prone to be affected by arthritis. Normal facet joints naturally...

Treating Your Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction

The piercing pain that follows tight muscles together with decreased mobility and the numbness that trails down your buttocks and legs are the commo symptoms associated with low back pain associated with conditions of the lumbar spine. But, when your lumbar back pain points to the sacroiliac joint instead, what are your treatment options? The sacroiliac joint is located in the area between the sacrum and the back of the hip where the spine connects to the pelvis at the level of the hips. The sacroiliac is made up of two bones, the sacrum and the ilium. Although referred to as a joint, the sacroiliac joint provides no movement on its own. The function of the sacroiliac joint is to support the movements of the lower extremities. With underuse and overuse, the muscles surrounding the joint may become irritated or tight, adding stress and pressure that will often lead to sacroiliac joint dysfunction, another possible diagnosis that could be truly causing your lower back pain....

Exercise and Spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis is a condition, more commonly affecting the lumbar spine, that occurs when one vertebra shifts forward above the vertebrae beneath it, misaligning the natural structure of the spine. A  degeneration in the spine is the  most common cause for spondylolisthesis. A round the age of 50, normal degeneration starts  and if left untreated can lead to many issues. By starting with the appropriate exercises as earliest as possible, your symptoms associated with spondylolisthesis can be avoided. Physical therapy is one of the many non-surgical treatments for spondylolisthesis. Following up with treatment from a physical therapist, a proper routine of stabilization exercises along with flexion and stretching will strengthen the local lumbar muscles, re-establishing your stability and improving the support the spine needs to help you deal with the condition and its debilitating symptoms. The “Knees to Chest” stretch is one exercise most often recom...

Finding Relief for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Low back pain could be due to a variety of reasons, identified by the common symptoms of sciatica, but an additional pain, numbness, or tingling in both of your legs could signal another condition commonly associated with low back pain known as lumbar spinal stenosis. Lumbar spinal stenosis is a progressive spinal condition characterized by a natural wear and tear degeneration of the spine, causing the spinal canal to narrow. Through time, a narrow spinal canal begins to compress the spinal nerve roots leading to low back pain along with sharp pain that trails down your legs, a tingling sensation on the lower extremities, and/or local numbness. Once diagnosed with spinal stenosis, seeking medical help from a physical therapist will  improve your symptoms,  benefiting  your condition. A degeneration of the spine as we age is unavoidable, but preventing low back pain and spinal stenosis from ever developing in your body can be achieved by receiving treatme...

Causes and Symptoms of your Sciatic Pain

El Paso’s chiropractor, Dr. Alex Jimenez addresses the symptoms associated with sciatic nerve pain and its causes. Sciatica is best known as a group of symptoms instead of a single condition. The pain experienced by a person with sciatica is most commonly located in the lower back, hip, buttocks, and outer side of the leg. An increased number of the population suffers from a condition causing low back pain throughout their lifetime but the causes for their sciatic nerve pain may vary. The symptoms of sciatica consist of constant pain reaching from their lower back down to the leg, followed by numbness and a tingling sensation as a result of compression, irritation, or pressure of the sciatic nerve roots. Sciatica symptoms will occur once a pinched nerve develops as a result of a degenerative disc disorder, such as  an osteoarthritis bone spur or  a herniated disc. A herniated disc develops when the cushion that separates a vertebrae of the spine ruptures and begins pus...
