Medical Evaluations for Degenerative Disc Disease

It can be difficult to diagnose degenerative disc disease (DDD) because it grows gradually and can pose a multitude of associated problems (spinal stenosis, herniated disc, etc). For example, your doctor may be able to rapidly diagnose you for having a herniated disc, but it is more challenging to diagnose a herniated disc due to degenerative disc disease. If you have back or neck pain that comes on suddenly, or in the event you have pain that persists, call a doctor who will refer you to a spine specialist. Your healthcare specialist will make an effort to discover the reason for your pain so that he or she can develop an accurate treatment plan for you—a method to manage your pain and other symptoms of degenerative disc disease and also that will help you recover. As he/she works toward a diagnosis, your spinal specialist will ask about your present symptoms and what treatments you’ve already attempted. Yoga and Meditation Can Help Beat Depression

The calming poses and meditation of yoga may be just what the doctor ordered when it comes to beating depression, new research suggests. Researchers found that weekly sessions of yoga and deep breathing exercises helped ease symptoms of the common condition. They believe the practice may be an alternative or complementary therapy for tough-to-treat cases of depression. The intervention seemed helpful for “people who are not on antidepressants and in those who have been on a stable dose of antidepressants [but] have not achieved a resolution of their symptoms,” study lead author Dr. Chris Streeter said in a news release from Boston Medical Center. He’s a psychiatrist at the hospital and an associate professor of psychiatry and neurology at Boston University. How Depression Can Improve with Yoga Major depression is common and often persistent and disabling, Streeters’ team noted. Up to 40 percent of people taking medication for this form of depression won’t see their depress

Latissimus Dorsi: Exercises & Stretches For Your “Lats”

El Paso, TX. Chiropractor Dr. Alex Jimenez examines the “lats,” along with exercises and stretches. The latissimus dorsi muscles — generally only called “the lats” — are the two biggest, broadest muscles in your back and, overall, one of the largest muscle groups in the entire body. As extensor muscles, the lats mostly have the job of assisting to lift upward the arms as they reach and lengthen. The lats take part in other important functions beyond shoulder extension too, including internal rotation of supporting core equilibrium and the torso. In case you perform pulldowns, rows or lifting exercises for the shoulders using a resistance band or machine, odds are you’re already strengthening and participating your lats. Nevertheless, it’s common even for sportsmen to wind up growing latissimus dorsi muscles that are tight due to overuse or little stretching — lower back pain and considered to be an important cause of both long-term shoulder. For individuals who are performing str

Sports Injuries: Stress Fractures to the Ribs

Stress fractures to the ribs occur in rowers, golfer, canoeists, lacrosse players and baseball pitchers. They are more common in sports involving an element of trunk rotation with scapula movement across the rib cage. A stress fracture is described as an overload to the bone caused by repetitive loading due to a particular movement. Any load on the bone will create a stress in the bone. However, given enough recovery time the bone heals and ends up stronger. This is known as Wolfe’s law. But, if the bone load is too high or too frequent, then the bone does not repair quickly enough, a stress response occurs and a fracture follows. In rowing, the repetitive loading is created by a number of factors. Muscles such as the serratus anterior and abdominals that directly attach to the ribs can lead to loading on the ribcage due to contraction. Bad rowing technique, perhaps caused by poor hip flexibility, which then requires an excessive compensatory thoracic rotation, may then lead to

Characteristics of Degenerative Disc Disorder

Degenerative disk disease (DDD) can affect any area of the backbone, but it most commonly affects the low back (lumbar spine) or neck (cervical spine). Where you might have pain will be based on what area of your spine has got the disk degeneration. You could experience pain for instance, at the site of the damaged disc—in your lower back. However, the pain might also radiate (or travel) to a different part of your own body. The nerves that branch off your backbone travel to various areas of the body , so if the degenerated disc is pressing on a nerve in your back that is low —a nerve that’s heading down to your legs—you may experience pain in your leg, too. The pain message will “go,” and this can be called a radiculopathy in the medical world. Symptoms of Degenerative Disc Disease Typically, people who have degenerative disk disease have chronic back or neck pain. Sometimes pain will flare up—that’s called an acute episode. The main symptom, however, is pain, so you need

A Weak Psoas Muscle Could Be The Basis For Back Pain

El Paso, TX. Chiropractor Dr. Alex Jimenez takes a look at the psoas muscle and its relation to back pain. All too often we find ourselves experiencing aches and pains in our bodies, especially in the low back. If you find yourself commonly searching for remedies for fast back pain relief, it might be time to research the psoas muscle. Technically named iliopsoas, the psoas major, may very well be among the main muscles within the body. Why? This deep-seated heart muscle helps support your back and much more. In the event the psoas is weak, it might be the cause of neck pain, back pain and many other issues. In fact, the psoas major muscle is especially distinctive, particularly as it pertains to postural function. It’s the only muscle which joins reduced body and the lumbar spine. It’s clear to see taking care of this deep psoas muscle is essential to a powerful, pain free body. Many others believe a healthy psoas is very important for spiritual and mental health, also. What
